Japan seeking waiver on sanctions to get oil from Iran

Japan on Thursday requested that the United States grant it a waiver from new Washington-ledJapan seeking waiver on sanctions to get oil from Iran sanctions on Iran, pointing to the risk of an economic setback and already reductions in its oil imports from the Middle Eastern country, a senior Japanese Foreign Ministry official said on Friday, Kyodo News reported.

Japan asked a U.S. delegation that a bill signed into law by U.S. President Barack Obama on New Year’s Eve aimed at hampering Iran’s crude oil exports be applied “flexibly”, the unidentified official said.

Japan, which imports about 10 percent of its oil from Iran, noted that its fragile economy since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami should be taken into account, although Tokyo well understands the need for stepping up pressure on Iran to curb the major oil producer’s nuclear ambitions.
